Rising Sea Level: Church of St. Michele, Venice, Italy, 2006
This church is located on the cemetery island in the open waters north of Venice. The metal breakwater surrounding the corner of the island protects the church from the constant waves that are especially strong during high tide.
"Sea level rise due to global warming has increased the water level in Venice by 23 cm in the past 100 years, and a further rise of about 50 cm is projected to occur over the next century," according to The American Association for the Advancement of Science. The rising sea levels will dramatically accelerate water management problems that Venice has faced for years. These problems may become so severe that they exceed the capacity of human preservation efforts. (See for example, The Science of Saving Venice by Caroline Fletcher and Jane da Mosto.)
