Glacial, Icecap and Permafrost Melting: Fairbanks, Alaska, 2006
Any piece of ground that has remained frozen for at least two years is, by definition, permafrost. Fairbanks, Alaska, where these photographs were taken is just below the Arctic Circle, and in recent years due to higher average temperatures year-round, the city's permafrost city has been melting. As the permafrost gives way, trees that had been growing on top of it tip at odd angles and infrastructure such as roads and buildings buckle. (See Elizabeth Kolbert's series of articles: Climate of Man in The New Yorker Magazine, April-May 2005.) |
